Background

Green Girls Organisation is Africa's only social enterprise using AI to identify clean energy problems facing women and girls in rural communities in Africa. They use the data collected to train women and girls to use technology which generates energy from the sun and waste and supports them to find employment or set up their own businesses in the clean energy sector. Capacity building and skills training is at the core of this project with the women trained going on to act as peer educators on climate change in their community.

Why did we choose this project?

GGO are not only empowering women and girls but helping the planet at the same time- what's not to love. Rural communities in Africa use kerosene and firewood for energy which is costly, dangerous and often in short supply. Encouraging these communities to use solar and biomass instead is money saving, reduces toxic fumes which would be emitted from kerosene and firewood usage and reduces the number of trees being cut down which in turn prevents soil erosion and helps re-green the planet.

How does it work?

This project focuses on 3 main areas (1) promoting the use of renewable energy to combat poverty, improve living conditions and strengthen the resilience of vulnerable populations and promote women economic empowerment (2) providing skills to girls in rural communities in both solar and biogas followed by supporting the creation of small businesses in this sector (3) encouraging the Cameroonian government to put in place environmentally sustainable gender responsive policies in the energy sector empowering girls to be entrepreneurs and giving them access to finance

Star fact

Nearly 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa still lack access to electricity forcing them to turn to dangerous sources of light or cut their days short.
