Background

Sunshine is in abundance in Africa. But when the sun goes down the working day ends for millions of people. For millions of others the only option is to ignite kerosene lamps and paraffin candles, which emit toxic fumes into their lungs and into the earth’s atmosphere. Yet with the power of solar and the flick of a switch we can change the story in an instant. SolarAid is working to deliver clean, safe, and affordable solar lights to rural communities across sub-Saharan Africa, reaching the places no one else goes to.

Why did we choose this project?

To ensure universal access to energy and to make lasting change happen faster SolarAid is building sustainable businesses which involve communities. By selling solar lights rather than giving them away SolarAid has built a market which spreads faster than handouts and is sustainable. Rather than beneficiaries people are customers which gives them rights if products are faulty. Every time someone switches on a solar powered light it’s an instant win for both people and the planet.

How does it work?

Trusted members of the community become partners of SolarAid's social enterprise, SunnyMoney, and work as solar entrepreneurs. The solar entrepreneurs educate their community in the technology, building a self sustainable market for solar lights. The impact of one solar light to a family’s life: * Every member of the household uses it * 5 people reached with clean, safe light * 1 more child studying after dark * $126 saved each year as families no longer have to buy candles, kerosene or batteries * 4 people feeling safe at home with the added security of bright light

Star fact

Nearly 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa still lack access to electricity forcing them to turn to dangerous sources of light or cut their days short.
