Background
CO2balance has partnered with Estufas Chispa, a stove manufacturer in Guatemala, to carry out project implementation, monitoring and evaluation of this cookstove project. The project will work towards accelerating the transition to clean cooking in Guatemala as the improved cookstoves, will contribute to the reduction of wood used in cooking across the country. Through the carbon finance mechanism, stove users will also obtain a 3-year long warranty on their stoves.
Why did we choose this project?
Fuel-efficient stoves have been provided to communities through a subsidised sales model to allow more rural communities access to clean cooking, replacing open wood fires for cooking. As well as reducing carbon emissions through the improved cookstoves, the project delivers numerous additional impacts to the local communities, such as an 83% reduction in hours spent collecting firewood, saving 2.33 hours per trip, and a 67% reduction in household air pollution, from technology implemented to significantly improve household health.
How does it work?
Currently, 6000 cookstoves across Guatemala have been included in this project, monitored yearly and with a continuous feedback mechanism in place. CO2balance will manage the carbon project accreditation process, generating carbon credits for clients to purchase. These funds will be reinvested into the project to fund the ongoing project activities and costs.
Star fact
When cooking on open fires families can spend 20 hours a week or more gathering wood, time that might otherwise be spent at school, at work, or simply at rest. Improved local cookstoves as well as reducing carbon emissions will free up valuable time.
