Background

The Amazon rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world, accounting for 20% of the world's biodiversity. About 60% of it is in Brazil and despite specific national legislation for forest protection on private lands, around 100M hectares of forest are still legally allowed to be deforested. Our programme incentivises landowners in the Amazon region to give up their right to clear the forest areas within their properties, and instead conserve them using finance from the voluntary carbon market.

Why did we choose this project?

The programme initially targets around 2 million hectares, with all properties going through a thorough due diligence process. Private landowners that enrol in the programme are provided with extensive technical support to implement activities that maximise the environmental and social benefits for the surrounding communities. The project has already provided skills training to 187 locals to bolster economic abilities, financed health benefits & domestic abuse support to 259 people, and invested in environmental education programs & materials for 102 locals.
