Background
Agreena, headquartered in Denmark, leads Europe's largest soil carbon programme. Through its AgreenaCarbon project - the first major cropland initiative under Verra's Verified Carbon Standard - it works with thousands of farmers across 4.5M hectares in 20 markets. Agreena finances the shift to regenerative practices, uses AI-driven dMRV for accurate climate impact, and offers corporates high-quality credits with country-specific, removal or reduction options.
Why did we choose this project?
Regenerative agriculture has a massive potential to mitigate emissions. The answer to unlocking the potential of the sector lies in regenerative agriculture practices which can enrich our precious life-sustaining soils - while also contributing to meeting the demands of a growing population. Serving as natural carbon sinks, soils also hold immense potential to sequester carbon and mitigate the effects of climate change. More than 55% of the climate mitigation potential in the EU-27 agricultural sector lies in agricultural soil and manure management.
How do we know it's working?
Agreena ensures high-integrity through robust Digital Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV); combining farmer data, remote sensing, machine learning, and soil sampling to quantify field-level outcomes. This data feeds into their comprehensive, field-specific MRV approach. All modelling methods are independently verified by external experts and align with Verra VCS and the GHG Protocol. Key regenerative practices - such as soil disturbance, are tracked to ensure every credit issued accurately reflects verifiable carbon sequestration and avoided emissions.
