Alongside the community, we have helped restore and conserve mangrove estuaries surrounding this area for nearly 5 years. From the field! These might just seem like lumps of logs, however, these are actually mangrove pole rafts that were constructed by mangrove poachers. They will cut down the trees, construct rafts out of them, and rely on the tide to float them down the river so they don't get caught with them. You can fight deforestation with reforestation today! Nearly 4 million hectares of forest in Mozambique were destroyed in a 20-year period. By planting and protecting land in the Maputo Province of Mozambique, our team is working to reverse the effects of climate change while being empowered with sustainable livelihood options.

One-year growth from the field in Madagascar. Mangroves aren't just powerhouses for storing carbon. They also play a critical role in local communities and global industries that rely on them for fishing, with an estimated 80% of fish catch relying on them directly or indirectly.

At one of our sites in Androibe, Madagascar, some community members who own a zebu cart agree to help us transport seedlings from the nursery to the site. In return, we pay them daily according to the number of trips made. Working together with the community not only helps us transfer seedlings safely to the site, but also enables us to provide additional economic opportunities to the local community.

From the nursery to the field, our teams take innovative measures to help our restoration sites reach their potential. To safely transport mature, ready-to-plant seedlings from the nursery to our Antsanitia restoration site, our team covers the seedling’s roots in mud and wraps them in banana leaves. Doing this helps ensure the roots don’t dry out during transportation and keeps them healthy until they are planted in the ground.

In 2019 this area, Morangobe, Madagascar, was at risk of being lost due to a lack of funding. But because of continued support, it has become an emerging landscape of thick mangrove forest that will make a lasting impact on the local wildlife and the local communities.

Ever wondered how mangroves are planted? We collect ripe propagules from mature trees, sort them by species and transfer to the project sites. The propagules are placed directly into the mud based on the tidal zones to ensure a healthy, diverse forest.

By collecting and planting mangroves our teams in Mozambique help protect coastal communities from natural disasters, improve ocean health, and build the local economy by facilitating community development. We are working directly with over 900 community members to restore over 13,800 hectares of land in Mozambique.

By planting mangroves, our teams in Mozambique are helping mitigate the effects of climate change. As propagules grow to become healthy mangrove forests, they help stabilize the shoreline to protect local communities from storms and create a habitat for local wildlife populations. 

Mangrove Reforestation - Madagascar joined Pinwheel!

Amélia Chilengue is a planter at the Chilhale site in Mozambique. Her day begins at 7:00 AM with carefully planting propagules one meter apart in the thick mud of a mangrove planting site. When she completes her planting for the day, she collects more propagules from mature mangroves, sorts them by species, and prepares for the next round of planting.

We're working with Eden Reforestation in Mozambique. The mangrove seedlings in this nursery in Maputo will help restore the environment and transform local communities throughout the nation of Mozambique.
