Rescue and rehabilitate trafficked animals.
Animal trafficking is one of the most significant threats to the protection of species. This illicit activity generates an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 million euros annually, rivalling the revenues of drug and arms trafficking. Marmosets, a species of small primates, and kinkajous, a carnivorous mammal native to Central America, are both heavily affected by this illegal trade. Both species have intricate social and dietary needs, requiring constant specialised attention and care.

Currently, illegal species trafficking is a silent but significant threat to global biodiversity. Threatened species become victims of this criminal activity, facing the loss of their habitat and, in many cases, extinction. Every year, countless animals fall victim to this illicit trade, facing miserable living conditions, abuse and extreme stress as they undergo a traumatic journey from their natural habitat to the black market. Many of them do not survive. It is estimated that in 15 years approximately 164,000 seizures have been made in 120 countries. In Spain, approximately 900 live animals have been seized in just 10 years, including exotic birds, exotic reptiles, mammals and raptors. Our Wildlife Rescue is carried out to improve the conditions of species that enter and are victims of illegal trafficking. Only through continuous effort and global commitment will we be able give these animals the opportunity they deserve to live freely and return to their natural habitats.
Abnormal and repetitive behaviour is one of the most common symptoms exhibited by birds in captivity and is widely accepted as an indicator of poor welfare. This behaviour reflects distress and a severely compromised mental state. The lack of social interaction and unnatural environments contribute to the development of repetitive actions, such as feather pecking. Our biggest challenge at our CITES center is to adapt the facilities for psittacine birds that are victims of illegal trafficking to create a natural and stimulating environment that prevents the appearance of these symptoms.
