Hood River Tree Farm - Oregon
Longer harvest rotations keep more carbon in a public forest in Oregon.
Stretching from the north slopes of Mount Hood to the Columbia River, the Hood River County Tree Farm is a 32,284-acre public forest in Oregon. Timber sales have long funded county services, and rising costs put pressure on the forest to be harvested harder. Instead, the county is extending harvest rotations to 90 years, keeping more carbon stored in its trees. Carbon revenue supports local schools, healthcare and wildfire risk reduction, while the certified working forest stays open for hiking and mountain biking, and provides habitat for a large variety of wildlife.
