Background
This project has restored over 130,000 acres across the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) and South- Eastern US, with a large proportion of these efforts focused in the MAV, dubbed America’s Amazon. The project uses tree planting to establish largely hardwood trees on lands that have been in continuous agricultural use and have not been in a forested state for 10 years. Landowners commit to protecting the trees, and limited harvest is allowed after the trees grow to the point where crowding of trees is expected to cause some trees to die.
Why did we choose this project?
GreenTrees is the largest reforestation program in the US, accounting for over 99% of the reforestation efforts. Within 7 years, a GreenTrees forest is home to twice as many migratory birds. 39.7 jobs are created for every $1 million invested in forest management and recreation, with $100 million distributed over the last 20 years.
Star fact
For every 1 acre of farmland reforested by GreenTrees ACRES reforestation project 15Lbs of nitrogen and phosphorus are kept out of the Mississippi River.
