Developing chimpanzee corridors in Uganda

Protecting chimpanzees and biodiversity via community-led agroforestry.

The forests of the Albertine Rift are rich in biodiversity with many species unique to this area, including the threatened eastern chimpanzee and white bellied pangolin. In Uganda, the northern section of these forests is highly fragmented and threatened as a result of degradation and agricultural conversion. Fragmentation not only threatens biodiversity, but also increases human-wildlife conflict – as wildlife is increasingly forced to move across agricultural land, increasing both crop losses and disease risks. Chimpanzees represent a key flagship species for connectivity across this landscape.
