Background
A connected and species rich temperate rainforest once stretched across the Celtic landscape of the British isles to form an unbroken wild forest. But we cleared the land and with it our important woodland habitats. Temperate Rainforests are some of the world’s rarest woodland habitats. In the UK they survive in small pockets along the West Coast, with only 2 percent of our ancient native rainforests remaining, these important woodland worlds lie fragmented and endangered.
Why did we choose this project?
Shaped by the Atlantic, these woodlands are lush, biodiverse, species rich and essential for our native wildlife. Plant One is a UK based woodland creation organisation dedicated to not only restoring the Celtic Rainforest, but all essential woodland habitats. The UKs Biodiversity is depleted, and we are losing our connection, let's stop nature decline, and lets make a place for us to reconnect with the natural world. Join Plant One in their mission.
How does it work?
Plant One are woodland creators, and for them, this means committing to land for at least 5 years to create woodlands that ensure fields become forests. To achieve their woodland creation aims, they use site-specific methods to ensure woodlands are created. Planting and establishing trees is part of that process, but more importantly, working with nature and the land to ensure natural regeneration flourishes. From herbivore management to consulting with the landowner and effectively managing the land, they are creating and expanding precious woodland habitats.
How do we know it's working?
They work year round to monitor and respond to woodland needs using tools like Tremap and RESTOR to manage the data, and regular beat-ups for effective monitoring. Alongside monitoring tree establishment, they survey biodiversity uplift. This is all reported in their annual impact report, which supporters can access. But they believe seeing is believing, so accountability through tangibility is at the core of our work. From supporter involvement in personal site visits to winter tree planting days and summer woodland creation work, engagement is key to Plant One.
Star fact
Temperate rainforests in the UK are incredibly rare and globally significant, covering less than 1% of the UK's land area. They are home to unique biodiversity, including rare lichens, mosses, and fungi that rely on the damp, shaded environment to survive.
