Through coral gardening, mangrove planting, shoreline protection and long-term ecological monitoring, the initiative aims to rebuild marine habitats, increase biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience and support local communities through conservation, education and sustainable livelihoods.

Why did we choose this project?

Pulau Dayan is home to globally significant coral reef ecosystems that are increasingly threatened by climate change, severe storms and the legacy of destructive fishing practices. These pressures have damaged marine habitats and accelerated coastal erosion, putting local livelihoods and biodiversity at risk. This project is critical because it combines science-led restoration with local stewardship, delivering measurable environmental outcomes while empowering the community to protect and restore their marine environment for generations to come.

How does it work?

Coral fragments are sustainably collected from healthy reefs and grown in underwater nurseries until they are strong enough to be transplanted onto degraded reef areas. Mangroves are planted behind artificial breakwaters to reduce erosion and protect the coastline. Throughout the project, reef health, coral growth and survival are monitored, while local communities receive training to manage restoration activities, ensuring long-term environmental and social impact.
