Biochar in Chile

Eucalyptus waste locked away as stable soil carbon

Chile has one of the largest plantation forestry sectors in South America, and every harvest leaves behind branches, tops and other residues with little commercial value. Left to rot, or burned to clear the ground, this material releases its carbon back into the atmosphere. Carbono Capital takes residual eucalyptus biomass and turns it into biochar, a charcoal-like material that holds onto its carbon for the long term. All of that biochar then goes back into the ground, enriching the soils of local family-owned farms.
