B Corp and our road to sustainability

As a start-up, Pinwheel is in a privileged position to build from the ground up a business for the future; a business that considers our community and our employees to be equally as important as our profits; a business that cares for our environmental resources just as preciously as our financial capital.

Last week, we passed a significant milestone in this mission: we officially gained our B Corp Pending status. We’d like to take a moment to explain why we’ve chosen to embark on this journey, with the hopes to perhaps inspire you and your business to take responsibility for your own impact.

Firstly, what, or who is B Corp? It was all started by a non-profit called B Lab, the ‘b’ standing for benefit, in 2006. Their mission? To transform the economy from one that prioritises profit above all else, to a one that is founded on a ‘triple bottom line’ of social, environmental and financial sustainability. This has mainly occurred through their B Corporation Certification – an environmental impact programme that awards companies for maintaining high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

“B Corp Pending” – our current status - is a sustainability certification for businesses who have been in operation for less than 12 months. It signals to stakeholders that a company is well on the path to becoming a Certified B Corporation, joining the ranks of a 4000-strong army of B Corporations worldwide.

We’re sure the benefits of joining this programme are already becoming clear, but there are so many more.

Firstly, gaining 3rd party verification proves that we are committed to using our business as a force for good – not just saying we are. Secondly, ‘pending’ status demonstrates to the world that we have already installed strong governance as a company and have adopted a legal framework to protect our mission – making a legally binding commitment to protecting our planet and the people in it. Thirdly, a lot of the requirements help businesses just be better businesses, offering helpful tips and prompts to install robust operational practices that can help them scale success. But most of all, it sets the intention, through every stratum of our organisation, to consider our impact deeply and widely, in everything that we do, from the very beginning of our story.

The road to full certification won’t be easy, the process is reassuringly difficult, but we’re excited to embed both environmental and social sustainability into everything we do from the get-go.
